What is Exercise Physiology?

There is so much evidence about the importance of movement in helping heal the body – an Exercise Physiologist uses exercise to help people manage chronic disease, injury or disability.

An Exercise Physiologist can play a critical role in your management and recovery, providing expert guidance to ensure that what you are doing is both safe and beneficial for your body. They will assess your current health and condition and make exercise recommendations specific to your situation.

Typical conditions that can be managed with Exercise Physiology include:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Balance Issues
  • Mental Health
  • Heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke rehabilitation
  • Cancer
  • Pregnancy & Pre/Post Natal
  • Respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD
  • Neurological conditions such as brain injury, Parkinson’s disease and MS

An EP can also work with the ‘healthy’ population for those who are seeking expert exercise advice. This might include:

  • Individuals who have not exercised before, lack confidence or just don’t know where to start
  • Women who are pregnant, trying to conceive or wanting extra care/advice during the pre/post-natal periods
  • Athletes looking for injury prevention or a performance-based program

The First Step

During your initial assessment, our EP will assess your current health state and set some goals. This might involve a discussion about your medical history, medications and physical activity status, as well as looking at some light fitness testing or baseline measurements. By the end of your consult, you will know more about your body and have a plan in place for subsequent sessions.

Sessions might include:

  • 1:1 Exercise sessions in our private clinic gym
  • 1:1 Exercise sessions at our partner gym – Benefitness (Fairview Park)
  • Falls Prevention & Balance Small Group
  • Seniors Exercise Group
  • Hydrotherapy Group
  • Type 2 Diabetes Group
  • Pre/Post Natal Reformer Group
  • Clinical Pilates Reformer Group
  • General Circuit Group
  • Home Exercise Program with ongoing consults for reviews
  • Referral for gym membership, Pilates or other exercise interventions
